Introduction
formerly called the Foothills Bed & Breakfast Association
There is a place not far away...almost locked in time...that beckons the wanderer..."come see my beautiful mountains...refresh yourself in my cool rivers and streams...see my beautiful waterfall...walk my trails or relax in my peaceful meadows".

|
The Carolina Foothills region is as old as time itself. Once the favorite haunt of American Native Indians who hunted the valleys and adjacent flatlands, gathering as they went, wild berries and nuts. Local caves in the mountains provided shelter and refuge during winter storms, and from their enemies too. In the 1700's, a peace treaty was made between Chief Skyuka and Governor (General) Tryon. A local mountain still bears his name.
Later settled by pioneers, the region became famous for its hospitality, its fruits and wines. Low Country South Carolinians escaping the deadly malaria and oppressive heat sought refuge in this area enjoying the cooler breezes and safer clime. Wonderful plantations homes in this "up country" area still stand and some are accessible to the public.
While enjoying your stay with us, also visit the many beautiful pre and post Victorian homes that can be found just off our main streets. Many housed such notables as General Doubleday, Lady Astor, David Niven, General and Mrs. Marshall and the Southern poet Sydney Lanier. Many of these homes today are Inns and Beds and Breakfasts, where the food is sumptuous, hospitality impeccable and your nightly rest...peaceful!

In the Carolina Foothills area you will find many of your favorite relaxations...canoeing...exploring...hiking...fishing...year round golf...charming rural roads and wonderful vistas of valleys and mountains. The region offers wonderful opportunities for the camera-active person.
For those who enjoy antiquities, one can find many local stores that offer unique area items. Perhaps an original Tryon toy or an old local map?
For those who require more activity, one will find close by Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, where the Blue Ridge Mountains meet in Hickory Nut Gorge. For the "stately home" buff, the Biltmore House with its grand views and Victorian trappings can be found in less than an hours drive.
The Foothills region is embraced by a "thermal belt", thus providing a peculiar atmospheric condition that maintains a higher temperature in the Winter and a cooler temperature in the Summer. This condition has attracted and pleased visitors worldwide.
