We can map a day tour in any direction!
To the West is the Red River Valley. See farm activities spring, summer & fall. Visit the Bonanza Farm of the early machine era or Fort Abercrombie, and the early settler year's museum or the Fort itself. Dinner can be at a small town school house that is a now a very fine dining experience.
To the North you can wind through the hills and lakes, visiting the Hjelmkomst Center in Moorhead and the Norwegian stave church. The Hjelmkomst Center contains a replica of a Viking ship that was built and sailed to Norway. All along this route is the Birding Trail. You could stop at Rothsay to see the world's largest prairie chicken and visit their stomping grounds. We are in an area that is the dividing line between the lakes, hills and prairie to the west thus a large variety of bird species.
To the East is scenic Lake and hill country. In Fergus Falls is the outstanding OtterTail Couny Museum that follows a historic trail of the early settlements, one being a Morman community. Phelps Mill, Inspiration Peak, Ottertail Lake, and various antique shops (Dakota Antiques and Memory Lane are special) plus speciality shops are on your route.
To the South is Alexandria with additional antique shops. A stop at the Carlos Creek Winery would allow you some fine wine tasting and a visit to their horse stables. On your way back visit Battle Lake where dinner could be at "Stubs" the second best they say, at the "Otter Supper Club" or if you like Texas BBQ that is available, too, at "Elmer's".
Take some brie and a bottle of wine find a spot along the river or by one of the many lakes and simply take in the sights and sounds of the seasons and experience a time of solitude and peace.
All year long enjoy The Center for the Arts, Prairie Wetlands Learning Center , Historic walking tours, Otter Tail Historical Museum, Maplewood and Glendalough State Parks, Antique and quaint specialty shops and small villages in the wooded hills and valleys of this unique glacial ridge area. Lake activities, hiking, bird watching, horse riding, snowmobiling, exploring The Otter Trail and scenery are among the opportunities that visitors enjoy repeatedly.
Otter Tail County has been designated as a Minnesota Scenic Byway. One hundred fifty miles of our county and state roadways are part of this designation. Highlights along the Otter Trail include the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center, Inspiration Peak, Phelps Mill, Maplewood and Glendalough State Parks, and the scenic lake country, with Otter Tail County having the most lakes in Minnesota (1,048).
My wish is for you to arrive as a guest, but leave as a friend.
