Introduction
We cordially invite you to sample the intimate European opulence at The Barksdale House Inn.
Charleston's most recent bit of restored history. You can sense the Inn's historic atmosphere from the front walk to the formal garden in back. Approaching from the street, you find time has worn and delicately crafted a beautiful mosaic tile walk which leads to the double door entry and grand hall. Inside are three floors of individually designed rooms and lavish interiors that include Scalamandre borders and fabrics of the 18th and 19th centuries. Luxurious comforts await you in each of the fourteen rooms. Features include remote controlled televisions, fans hanging from the ten foot ceilings, as well as bedside gas log fireplaces, built in dry bars and whirlpool baths. Unusual furnishings and antiques, such as hand carved rice beds, an 1840 burled walnut Victorian canopy bed, and an inlaid mother of pearl bed adorn each of our suites.
History
Twenty-seven George Street was built in 1778, just one year prior to the Revolutionary Wars shifting into South Carolina. Twenty-seven George Street served as the townhouse for the Barksdale family when they were not at their country residence, Youghall Plantation. The Barksdale family was very active in the thriving city life of Charleston.
In May of 1817, Georges nephew and then owner, Thomas Barksdale sold the townhouse. From that time on the house had numerous owners and occupants. The 1980s found the house unoccupied and in a state of disrepair until its meticulous restoration in 1985 by Robert and Suzanne Chesnut. Now it is Charleston's most elegant yet intimate inn.
Available: Free Wireless Internet in all our rooms.
Each morning you will be greeted with a silver-trayed complimentary continental breakfast, complete with morning paper and fresh flowers in the privacy of your room or in the courtyard. The day is now yours for business or pleasure.
Our Bonifice at Twenty-seven George Street is available daily to help you schedule your sojourn in Charleston. We will be happy to assist you in making travel arrangements, dinner and entertainment reservations for you. For future visits, we would be happy to make advanced reservations for you.
After your jaunt out in Charleston, a treat of afternoon tea or sherry, compliments of the Inn, is served on the back porch or near the tiered fountain in the garden.
