Introduction
1880's settlers of British-founded Rugby, Tennessee enjoyed comfortable lodging at this charming, mansard-roofed boarding house, just as visitors do today. Historic Rugby has restored Newbury House and furnished each bedroom with Victorian antiques, some original in early Rugby.
Stay a night or more at this unique historic village to truly enjoy its charms. Some 20 original buildings still survive from the 1880's British experiment in rural, cooperative living. Historic Rugby nestles quietly among tall trees, surrounded by rugged gorges, where trails built by early colonists wind down to Clear Fork River. This beautifully preserved historic place is unspoiled by commercialization and ideally located for hiking, white-water rafting, biking, and horseback riding in nearby parks.
"This place was an unexpected surprise… A relief from civilization!" - B.D., Atlanta
Historic Rugby is an ideal location for group lodging for retreats, seminars, reunions, etc., for up to 30. Discounts possible on rates, depending upon facilities used and length of stay. Meeting rooms, custom menus and reduced tour rates are available.
Pioneer Cottage was literally the first house erected on the new Rugby town site in 1879. Founder Thomas Hughes spent his first visit to the colony at Pioneer, and many young Englishmen found temporary haven within its board-and-batten walls. Reconstructed Percy Cottage is picture-book Victorian Gothic, with beds tucked under steeply slanting gables.
"Coming here to Newbury House brings back the memories of the good things life can offer." - T.S., Baltimore
