Beautiful Surroundings The Cottage was built during the Second World War by my parents Miller and Inez Barley. The long farm table in the kitchen was our kitchen table when I was a boy. The main house, where Helen and I live, was built in the 1850's and added on to by my grandfather, Adam Barley, in 1884. Helen and I added a sunroom on the East side in 1981. Adjacent to the house is a smokehouse where pork, hams, shoulders and sides of bacon have been cured for over a century. We keep a few chickens for our eggs and supplement their rations with the excess produce from our vegetable garden. Our farm was declared a Centennial Farm by the State of Virginia and has been worked by Barley's for 141 years.
